Set in a strategic location on Italy's road, motorway and railway network, Emilia-Romagna is easy to get to if you’re travelling by car or train from Northern or Southern Italy.

The region also has three airports − Bologna, Rimini and Parma − as well as a number of marinas.

By car

The Milan-Naples A1 motorway runs through Emilia and links the area to many cities across Italy, including:

  • La Spezia, via the A15 from Parma;
  • Brennero, by taking the A22 from Modena;
  • Padua from Bologna via the A13;
  • all the way down south to Bari via the A14 from Bologna.

The Venice-Mestre SS 309 main road and the Rome-Ravenna E45 dual-carriageway also offer easy connections.

By train

The railway network provides fast connections with Northern, Central and Southern Italy. Trenitalia's and Italo's high-speed trains (AV) connect the Bologna and Reggio Emilia train stations to an array of cities around Italy, including Milan, Turin, Verona, Bolzano, Rome and Naples. If you're travelling from elsewhere in Europe, you can reach Emilia-Romagna via the Tarvisio, Brenner, Gotthard and Simplon mountain passes. DB / ÖBB operates daily direct connections from Munich.

You can also travel around the region on the high-speed trains run by Italo that stop in Reggio Emilia, Bologna and Rimini, and on Trenitalia's regional trains network.

By plane

The Parma, Bologna and Rimini airports connect the region to major cities across Italy and Europe via scheduled and chartered flights.

The Aeroporto Internazionale Guglielmo Marconi di Bologna is served by major international airlines, providing links between Emilia-Romagna’s capital and a number of cities around the world. You can get to Bologna from the airport by taxi, by using the Aerobus shuttle service or on the Marconi Express monorail line. But if Bologna isn't your final destination, check the list of shuttle service connections available to various towns in the region, including those on the Emilia-Romagna Riviera.

The region's second largest airport is Rimini airport. The Aeroporto Internazionale Federico Fellini di Rimini lies just a few miles from the city centre and gives travellers access to this seaside resort's famous beaches from an array of cities around the world, particularly those outside of Europe.

The "Luigi Ridolfi" airport of Forlì, the closest airport to Bologna airport, counts among its destinations some of the most famous Italian and European destinations.

Lastly, the Aeroporto Giuseppe Verdi di Parma is served by both domestic flights (such as to and from Cagliari and Rome Fiumicino airport) and international flights.

By bus

An extensive bus route network connects the region to many towns across Italy.

Once you're in the Emilia-Romagna region, one great way to get around the old town centres and to travel from one city to another is by using the "Mi Muovo Multibus" bus travel pass.

This one pass will let you travel on all bus services running in Emilia-Romagna at a very reasonable price.
