In Bertinoro, hospitality is at the center of community life, an attitude rooted for centuries, as evidenced by the Colonna delle Anella or dell'Ospitalità (Hospitality Column) placed in the heart of the town. According to tradition, in 995 Judge Andrea summoned a peace conference to Bertinoro to settle disputes that had arisen among the most powerful families in the area, but he was faced with the problem of where to host the nobles gathered; the problem was solved by a pact among the local nobles who initially vied for power.
Two centuries later, Arrigo Mainardi and Guido del Duca had the famous "Colonna delle Anella" or "Hospitality Column" erected: each ring belonged to a local family, and strangers arriving in the city, by tying their horse to a ring, became guests of the corresponding family.
This custom of openness is still a distinctive element of Bertinoro's identity, which every year, at the beginning of September, experiences the great Hospitality Festival.
On those days in Bertinoro you can relive the ancient kind gestures by climbing up to the Column: from each ring are hung several envelopes inviting a stranger to sit at the table of a Bertinoro family for the feast lunch.
Like every year, this evocative ritual, which will take place from September 1st to September 4th 2022, is accompanied by many other side events: concerts, shows, food stands, themed dinners, exhibitions... making this long weekend an event not to be missed!
