The Alta Via, or Ridgeway of the Apennine parks is the longest trekking route in the Emilia-Romagna Apennines. From Berceto in the Parma area, it runs all the way to the hermitage on Monte Carpegna, in the province of Pesaro-Urbino, in 27 sections that include three regions: Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and Marche.

For each section of the route, there are places where you can pitch your tent and camp for the night. Below is a list of the points on the ridgeway where you are permitted to camp for the night in the section of the route under Emilia-Romagna’s jurisdiction.

The Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park: sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

In the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park, camping is prohibited outside the areas specifically equipped for this purpose. Only in zones 2 and 3 of the park is camping permitted, where you can pitch your tent from sunset to sunrise.

Cedra and Parma Valleys Regional Park: section 2

In the Cedra and Parma Valleys Regional Park camping in a tent overnight is permitted with permission from the mayor of the Municipality of Monchio delle Corti for the area from Lake Ballano to Lake Verde; the rest of this section is located in the Emilian-Tuscan Apennines National Park.

The High Modenese Apennines Regional Park: section 7, 8 and 9

In the High Modenese Apennines Regional Park camping outside the campsites and duly authorized accommodation facilities is prohibited. The Giovo mountain shelter at Lago Santo is equipped with outdoor toilets for public use, while the Duca degli Abruzzi mountain shelter allows the public to use the toilets, but not showers.

The Suviana and Brasimone Lakes Regional Park: sections 11 and 12

In the Suviana and Brasimone Lakes Regional Park you can stay overnight at the campsite on Lake Suviana located along section 11.

Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park: section 16

For this section in the Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park you can stay in your tent at the Carnè mountain shelter, in the space used as a campsite adjacent to the Scout Hut.

Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park: sections 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24

For information on camping in the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park, please consult the Regulations for camping and outdoor overnight stays on the Casentinesi Forests National Park website.
Camping outside the designated campsite areas and the officially authorised farm and/or agritourism establishments is forbidden. It is also possible to camp in the areas outside the mountain shelters, bivouacs and other facilities for hikers, but only when these facilities are open and only if there is no accommodation available within the facilities themselves. In this case, an overnight stay in your tent is permitted for one night, from one hour after sunset to dawn, and for no more than two tents at the same time.
For camping outside the territory of the park, you need to contact the individual facilities directly.
