Bondeno is a municipality in Ferrara located on the banks of the Panaro river.

Why visit it

Bondeno was a free commune in medieval times, and then part of the estate of Canossa family, who constructed numerous buildings there; the only one of which still remaining is the bell tower of the church of the Natività di Maria.

Being a frontier town, it was originally fortified and numerous castles dotted its territory: the Rocca Possente di Stellata, in the town’s surroundings, is one of them.

The area is also appreciated for it's gastronomy and presented as one of the locations of the "Strada dei vini e dei sapori".

The town is on the path of the cycling route "Destra Po" - a 120 kilometer cycling path that is divided into five parts that run along the right bank of the Great River and is suitable for any level as it is relatively flat.

Don't miss

A well-defined village in which are to be distinguished the local parish church, containing a 14th century wooden cross, and the Casa Ariosto, which belonged to the son of the outstanding poet and which is now seat of the Archaeological Museum "G. Ferraresi".

The most prestigious building is the Rocca Possente, a fort built in its present form at the end of the 17th century and at one time designed in the form of a star.

The fort was built to protect the Ferrara hinterland at the extreme north of the Este territory, together with the "twin" rocca di Ficarolo, built on the opposite bank and washed away by the flood of 1670 (the fortress is momentarily closed to the public).

As one of the locations of the "Strada dei vini e dei sapori", this town is also appreciated by those who love good food and also by those who love biking. The town is on the path of the cycling route "Destra Po" - a 120 kilometer cycling path that is divided into five parts and is suitable for any level as it is relatively flat.
