The 19th century and the legend of Correggio is mainly a tribute to two fundamental figures of Parma history: Marie Louise of Austria, Duchess of Parma, and the engraver Paolo Toschi. It's also intended to be the awaited solution to the long-standing set-up problem faced by all the former directors of the National Gallery. La Rocchetta, stage of this "permanent exhibition”, is in fact an extremely important space in terms of a historical point of view but hard to display in. It's the location of Correggio's altar pieces in a historical display of the 19th century, therefore  unremovable. They stand at the end of the museum tour, but chronologically out of context because they actually come after the 18th century works, on display in the ancient Accademy halls.
