The Triennial of Good Friday in Fanano is one of the most evocative events that take place during the Easter period in the Modenese Apennines.
An event that recalls a centuries-old tradition and that envelops the town in a suggestive atmosphere, with only the lighting of candles covered with red veiled paper.
The religious community of Fanano finds traces of its origins in documents far prior to the year 1000. An expression of religious tradition, the centuries-old re-enactment of the Passion of Christ represents one of the most ancient, characteristic and evocative manifestations of the Upper Modenese Apennines. It takes place every three years in an urban space sacralized for the occasion and admirably set up by the Confraternities and all the inhabitants, according to a wise and ancient direction, and it has as its heart an artistic eighteenth-century wooden statue depicting the dead Christ.
During the Holy week, the streets and squares come alive with a feverish work that unites men, women and young people of Fanano. The historic center of the town is transformed on this occasion. The most evocative moment is the evening of the procession when you walk through the town illuminated only by the dim light of lamps veiled in purple. The procession begins at 9.00 pm after the services of Good Friday and winds along the prepared path, while the Confraternities' members carry on their shoulders, an ancient privilege, the statues of the Dead Christ and the Madonna Addolorata, with the traditional "hoods" in the colors of the Confraternities (black, red and blue). The event has always attracted numerous faithful, tourists and people who love traditions and folklore to Fanano.
