Sarzano is located two kilometers from Casina, along the SS 63 west of Reggio Emilia

It can also be reached from Canossa, by the provincial road 11 towards Casina.

Why visit it

It is the most important monumental asset in the territory of Casina, we have news of Sarzano since the Middle Ages: it is mentioned in an ancient deed of Atto Adalberto, ancestor of the Countess Matilda of Canossa, in the year 958. The castle was part of the Canossa defensive system, along with other rocks that formed an impassable set for enemy armies. Sarzano stands to guard the road leading from Reggio Emilia to Canossa and Carpineti

From the castle it is possible to enjoy a 360 degree view from the ridge of the Apennines to the Po Valley.

Don't miss

The village is a medieval castle site, with double walls, three courtyards, a keep and square tower, and it dates back to the fifteenth century, the time of the Marquis Nicolò III d'Este. The Castle has been the subject of an important restoration and archaeological study, which has also returned the remains of a small chapel inside the walls.

Today it is a prestigious cultural container for events such as exhibitions, concerts, philosophical readings, and theatrical performances that alternate during the year. The houses of the village have become a hotel, with a bar, restaurant and rooms.

It is located on the route of the Via matildica del Volto Santo, which connects in a series of legs Mantua with Lucca and crosses this area.
