The Plautus Festival, whose first edition dates back to 1956, is undoubtedly one of the most important and long-lived theater festivals in Europe

Its mission is to honor the illustrious Sarsinate Tito Maccio Plauto, the greatest Latin playwright, the "giant" who towers at the beginning of Latin literature, the undisputed "father" of comedy worldwide, and with him the ancient and noble art of theater with particular attention to the repertoire taken from the "Ancient Drama".

Its scenes are trodden by the most famous actors of the Italian theatrical and cinematographic scenes, in a program that - in any case - does not disdain a “look” on the contemporary theatrical repertoire. The shows on stage, staged by the most important theater companies. traditionally take place inside the Plautina Arena: a modern and functional outdoor structure built in a gentle slope at the foot of the medieval village of Calbano (to visit).

Thanks to the coverage of the Arena, the staging of the shows is not subject to weather conditions. In the 2022 summer season, the 62nd edition of a Festival will be presented which has renewed its artistic direction, entrusted to Edoardo Siravo for the three-year period 2022-2024.

There will be fourteen appointments, of which six outside the Plautina Arena, the traditional container of the Festival. In fact, unpublished spaces will be enhanced for this purpose, such as the Piazzetta Lucio Pisone and the Basilica of San Vicinio.

The 62nd edition will open on July 16 in a very suggestive location, Badia di Montalto, with a concert by the talented and fascinating Simona Molinari, promoted by the Union of Valle del Savio Municipalities, as part of the "Savio Trail" project, and that the Plautus Festival is happy to host inside.

The closing, Thursday 18 August, is entrusted to Massimo Venturiello, a regular at the Plautus Festival, with “Agamemnon” by Aeschylus in the reinterpretation of the Greek poet and playwright Ghiannis Ritsos. In between, twelve appointments of Classical and Contemporary Theater, Commedia dell’Arte and music await us, all absolutely not to be missed!
