The historic Segavecchia Carnival, officially recognised by the Emilia-Romagna Region, returns to colour and enliven the streets of the historic centre of Cotignola, a few kilometres from Ravenna. From 12 to 15 March 2026, there will be parades of allegorical floats with papier-mâché masks, flag throwers and figures in period costumes. There will also be excellent food, music and exhibitions.

The origins of this festival are rooted in an ancient folk legend dating back to 1451, linked to Francesco I Sforza. According to tradition, an old witch was caught piercing an image of him with a pin and was sentenced to be beheaded. The sentence was carried out in the middle of Lent, before a cheering crowd. Even today, the festival culminates with the reading of the sentence and the burning of the witch, symbolising the end of winter and the arrival of spring.
