Casina

Casina is a municipality in the hills of Reggio Emilia, crossed by the SS 63 connecting Reggio Emilia to La Spezia. The high value of this territory has made it a Man and Biosphere Reserve recognized by UNESCO.

There are many hamlets to discover in the surroudings of Casina: medieval villages with stone houses, castles and ancient churches.

The Consortium of Ars Canusina is based in Casina: local companies propose motifs of the art and architecture of the Canossa family in their handicraft products: embroidery on hand-made fabric, ceramic objects, wrought iron furniture.

Keeping fit

Around Casina there are many paths and roads, ideal for walking in nature enjoying the landscape. The best known trekking and hiking route is the Via Matildica del Volto Santo, which connects Mantua with Lucca in a series of stages and crosses this area.

Even the Tassobbio valley offers interesting itineraries in a particular landscape, between rocks, small farmhouses and streams.

There is also the Casina Sport Village center, with a swimming pool and tennis courts.

Significant appointments

In the first weekend of August, Casina has hosted for over 50 years the Parmigiano Reggiano Fair, one of the most popular promotional events of this famous cheese: its production began over a thousand years ago, in these hills.

In the surroundings

On a hill next to Casina stands the Sarzano Castle, one of the fortresses of the famous Canossa family, that in the Middle Ages was the protagonist of the Investiture Struggle between Pope and Emperor.

The villages of Cortogno, Bergogno and Leguigno are among the most characteristic of the local historical architecture, boast millenary origins and during the year are enlivened by various gastronomic, musical and religious events.

From the towers of Leguigno or Sarzano castles it is possible to see the peaks of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the surrounding valleys.
