Castellarano

Logo CC

Castellarano is located on the hillside, on the left bank of the Secchia River, to the south east of the administrative centre of the province.

Why visit it

The town is an example of a fluvial castle town with a large, well conserved historic centre, clearly maintaining its original Medieval layout. The settlement, documented as far back as 900, is actually older, as revealed by archaeological findings in the surrounding areas.

When to go and what to see

The best seasons are spring and summer, so as not to miss the attractions of the surrounding hillside area.

Don't miss

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta whose crypt conserves Romanesque elements; the XV-century Rocchetta, a small fort equipped with three gates, one of which is pointed, a central tower and two lateral towers; the Clock Tower; the stairway of via del Monte; the XVIII-century aqueduct; the Church of Santa Croce and the (private) Castle, restored after damage during the last war.

Having fun

The San Valentino Golf Club is located in the valley of the same name.

Keeping fit

The Castellarano area is characterized by many nature and tourist trails that link to various villages and locations, through the green landscape of the hills.

Significant appointments

Grape Fair - Third weekend of September
Historical parade (Sunday).

In the surroundings

At Campiano is the Santuario della Beata Vergine della Neve (Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Snow) dating back to the XVIII century; at Roteglia is the Castle; in San Valentino there is a beautiful valley and the hamlet, dating back to the XI century, which has a Castle and Romanesque parish church.

A Big Bench has been inaugurated in Castellarano (Big Benches are oversized attractions that are part of the Big Bench Community Project world circuit, located in particularly scenic places, according to the project of the American designer Chris Bangle).
The garnet-coloured bench is located on Mount Malee, in the hamlet of Roteglia, with a wide panoramic view of the Secchia river valley and the main hills of the area, including Mount Cusna and Mount Valestra.
You can easily reach the bench on foot after parking at the San Valentino farmhouse.
