For centuries, the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines has been a fertile basin for hot springs, giving rise to waters with extraordinary healing properties. The small town of Porretta Terme has succeeded in capitalizing on these hot springs since ancient times to become one of the region's top spa destinations.

Accessible by car or train from Bologna, the Terme di Porretta springs reached their peak in the late nineteenth century. The reputation of these springs is said to come from a sick ox, now the symbol of the spa town, which was cured shortly after taking a drink from the springs.

To get the most out of the therapeutic properties of these waters, the Porretta spa provides guests with a series of spa treatments all year round, ranging from pool baths to ozone therapy, and pampers them with massages, compresses and relaxing facial and body treatments.

Thermal waters

The Terme di Porretta is supplied with sulphur water and sodium chloride, bromide and iodide-rich water which flow in from the nearby hot springs, each type brimming with therapeutic elements that have beneficial effects on the body and for treating disorders.

To name just a few who can benefit from this healing water, those suffering from respiratory tract disorders or allergies will find particular relief in the sulphur water, which can help boost the body’s immune defences. The sodium chloride, bromide and iodide-rich water has anti-inflammatory effects on the body’s tissue and antiseptic effects on the skin and mucous membranes, as well as generating a sense of calm for the nervous system.

Spa centre and aesthetic medicine

No list of treatments at the Terme di Porretta spa would be complete without mentioning balneotherapy. Soak in the facility’s thermal pool filled with sodium chloride, bromide and iodide-rich water at 35°C to experience the wonderful feeling of your muscles relaxing in an instant.

This type of pool is particularly recommended for those suffering from bone and joint conditions, as well as children and pregnant women. Body wellness then continues with the vascular therapy system, which comprises two water pools at different temperatures (22°C and 32°C) with massaging water jets at the side to stimulate blood circulation in the legs. This therapy is recommended for those suffering from water retention and heaviness in the legs.

In addition to the thermal water treatments, the facility also provides other services including a rehabilitation gym and ozone therapy, which takes advantage of the water’s antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.

Head to the spa for some pampering or for an experience that’s all about wellness. Alongside the spa treatments, the Porretta facility also provides an array of beauty treatments for the face and body, from exfoliating treatments to decongestant massages to toning and anti-cellulite thermal mud wraps.

Pure relaxation wellness packages are also available, designed for couples or individuals, and Ayurveda treatments.
