Castelnovo di Sotto hosts the most ancient and traditional carnival in the province of Reggio Emilia, whose origins date back to 1562.
In the 1990s, continuing the desire to recuperate traditions, there was the creation of a mask that encapsulated the character of the Carnival; he was called "Castlein", inhabitant of the castle, that is of the houses of the village within the walls of the hamlet, who presents himself dressed as a local dialect-speaking peasant.
On schedule are: giant float parades, mask competition, masquerades, masked groups, clowns, jugglers, balloon sculptors, face painting, street artists, and inflatables.
