In Santa Sofia, on Easter Monday, there has always been a big fair with exhibitors all over the center of the town.
Today it is basically a large market with stalls of various kinds but, originally, the Easter Monday Fair was an important farmer's market, mainly dedicated to livestock.
Since 2018, there has been an attempt to enhance the fair by bringing it back to tradition. Even the edition of 2024 will be dedicated to the world of farming and agriculture, themes dear to our territory.
The farmer's market of livestock, in Santa Sofia, was strictly linked to the Easter period: on Holy Thursday, on the occasion of the weekly market, farmers used to bring to the market the most beautiful and powerful oxen, festively decorated with vestments: it was the parade of the "Easter Ox". Then, after the Easter celebrations, there was the Easter Monday fair, which attracted all the inhabitants of the surrounding countryside to the village for a moment of celebration and entertainment.
The fair will take place on Monday, 1 April 2024, in the central streets of Santa Sofia, in the area of Piazza Garibaldi, Via Pisacane and Piazza Mortani. The Regional Association of Livestock Breeders of Emilia Romagna will hold a zootechnical exhibition with cattle, pigs, sheep, horses, etc. in Piazza Mortani. In nearby Via Pisacane, there will be an exhibition of gastronomic and craft products, as well as the opportunity to taste typical products selected by Slow Food Restaurants.
