A well-organised network of parks and nature reserves extends over the entire Emilia-Romagna region.
From the Apennine ridge to the Adriatic coast, there are many protected areas that contribute to make this territory unique in Italy and Europe: 2 national parks, 1 cross-regional park, 14 regional parks, 17 nature reserves including the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines UNESCO MAB Reserve and the Po Delta UNESCO MAB Reserve, added to which are the numerous protected and ecological balance areas from the Natura 2000 Network. The UNESCO heritage in the region also includes the ancient beech forests of the Casentinesi Forest National Park and the Sasso Fratino Nature Reserve, as well as caves and evaporitic karst of Emilia-Romagna, a complex of over 900 caves spread across the provinces of Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Rimini and Ravenna.
