Castelnuovo is one of the most important areas for the manufacture of pork products in Europe.
The tribute to the pig is held in the central square and called the “Superzampone” (Giant Stuffed Pigs Trotter). It is the biggest zampone festival in the world and registered in the Guinness Book of Records, in recognition of the social and economic importance of this product.
In 2003 the Archaeological Park will open in the small town of Montale. This will be an open-air museum of 23,500 square metres dedicated to the Terramare civilisation of which recent discoveries have uncovered an ancient walled enclosure dating to 1200 (one of the oldest in Italy) in the old centre of the town.
