There’s nothing better than taking your four-legged friend for a walk in nature. The National Park of the Casentino Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna, with its vast array of activities, is a true paradise to explore with your pet.
The entire area is crisscrossed by marked trails and paths surrounded by lush greenery, offering breathtaking views and the chance to encounter unique flora and fauna. There are truly countless itineraries to choose from.
That’s exactly why we want to offer you some interesting ideas and suggestions for the area around the town of Premilcuore, so you can enjoy a fantastic adventure with your faithful friend.
Before setting out, make sure you’re equipped with maps, a compass, hiking boots, water, and… plenty of energy.
Don’t forget that dogs must always be kept on a leash inside the park, and you must bring a muzzle and bags for picking up after your dog.
For owners of four-legged friends, we also recommend these itineraries around Emilia Romagna:
A beautiful route to enjoy with your pet is definitely the loop hike around Mount Tiravento in the municipality of Premilcuore. We’re in the Forlì area of Romagna, in the heart of the Casentinesi Forests National Park.
One possible starting point is the Public Photo Archive, in the historic center of Premilcuore.
From here, take Trail No. 325 along a charming forest path through downy oaks, pines, and Turkey oaks; after about half a kilometer, the trail branches off to the right to join the loop trail.
The lush greenery, the scents of nature, and the silence—broken only by your footsteps and the dog’s breathing—make this a unique experience.
Continuing to the next fork, we recommend following Trail 315 until you reach the paved road.
Technical Notes
Suitable for hikers who are accustomed to walking and in good physical condition.
For more experienced hikers
At the first fork, between trails No. 313 and No. 315, you can take trail No. 313 to reach the summit of Monte Tiravento. In this case, the trail—especially in the first part—features a long uphill stretch until you reach the summit.
Once at the top, you can enjoy an incredible view together with your faithful companion.
The next day, set out to explore the Rabbi River until you reach the picturesque Sega Waterfall.
After leaving your car in the parking lot on Via Sandro Pertini, cross the bridge with your pet and turn right onto Via Canova.
From here, following the wooden arrow-shaped trail markers labeled “Percorso fluviale / Antica strada Fiorentina,” you’ll soon reach the area’s most picturesque spots:
Must-see
If the weather permits, treat yourself to a refreshing dip in the waters of the Cascata della Sega… your dog will appreciate it too!
Travel Tip
About 3 km from the Grotta Urlante, near the junction with Trail 339, you can relax and have a snack at the Bivacco del Gorgolaio. The facility features a fountain with fresh water, two fireplaces for cooking, and a picnic area with tables and a stone barbecue.
Technical Notes
For those who wish to continue exploring nature, the area offers other interesting hiking opportunities, including the Nature Trail: it starts at the parking lot of the Fiumicello Tourist Residence Restaurant, about 6 km from the historic center of Premilcuore along State Road 9 ter.
This is an educational trail that, through informational panels along the route, explains how people lived in these areas before the depopulation of the mountains.
Must-See
The historic Mengozzi Mill: just 300 meters from the start of the trail, it tells a long story of work, traditions, and mountain life. Today, this charming place is still very much alive, and when open to the public on holidays, it offers the chance to see the old millstones in operation and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of days gone by. A picturesque stop, also ideal for a pleasant break with your four-legged friend.
Don’t Miss
In September, “Macinare Cultura” takes place—an initiative dedicated to showcasing the historic mills of Emilia-Romagna, true guardians of memory and tradition, often nestled in landscapes of great charm. For the occasion, these places are transformed into evocative stages where theater performances, folk music, storytelling, and traditions give voice to the region, creating engaging moments where culture, history, and community come together.
