Fiumalbo is located in the high Apennines of Modena, surrounded by Frignano Park, near the border with Tuscany and near the confluence of the Rio Acquicciola and Rio of Pozze, which combined form the Scoltenna River.
Among the villages of Frignano, Fiumalbo is the town that has best maintained the old town and its traditions. A particular feature is its dialect, which differs substantially from others in the area, both on the Emilian side and on the Tuscan one, constituting one of the most interesting points of transition between the northern Italian linguistic group (Emilia), to which it belongs, and the Italian central group (Tuscany), with a result similar to the Venetian language.
This small village with stone houses, nestled in a wonderful landscape, is a real paradise for hikers in the wilderness during the hot summer days. While in winter, Fiumalbo offers the possibility to go skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling in the mountains.
This town's name is derived from "Flumen Album", with a clear allusion to the foaming waters of the rivers surrounding the town. Even if its exact origin is uncertain, it is certain that there was already a settlement here in 1038. Among the major monuments in the old town today one should certainly visit the thirteenth century church of S. Bartolomeo, the Renaissance Chapel of S. Rocco, the Oratory of the Immaculate Conception and the S. Catherine.
The Church of St. Catherine of Siena also houses a permanent exhibition of sacred art with a bilingual audio guide for visitors. Among the most valued works, those that deserve special attention are a panel by Sacaccino Sacaccini da Carpi entitled "Madonna and Child Enthroned, " Saints Bartolomeo and John the Baptist in the first half of the sixteenth century, and the painting dating back to the first half of 1500.
Celtic huts with the characteristic structure of their roofs are located in the village of Valdara (6 km). Clearly visible traces of the passage of the Celts are situated also at the foot of Monte Cimone.
A very typical product of Fiumalbo is the crisp. This typical sweet was invented by a local Fiumalbo resident and the recipe is still a secret and unknown to many, but it is the main dessert of the pastry shops of the old town.
Mount Giovo (m. 1674), 10 km, is a crossing point located between Monte Femminamorta and Monte Borra. Along the way, there are several glacial cirques, notably in the tops and sides of the Mount Romecchio and Mount Rondinaio such as Santo lake, Baccio lake, Turchino lake, the Torbino lake and Legacci of Porticciola lake.
