From 21th september 2024 to 31 december 2025, the exhibition, hosted at the Church of San Lorenzo, displays twenty large works, most of them altarpieces, by Guercino and his pupils, which until now were hidden from the public eye because they were kept in locations that could not be visited.
An itinerary among the masterpieces by Guercino and his school from various closed locations: churches still unfit for use due to the 2012 earthquake and museums undergoing renovation, which have entrusted these ‘invisible’ masterpieces to the artist's hometown.
These works maintain a close dialogue with the heritage already on display in the Pinacoteca di Cento, as well as with other paintings housed in the church of San Lorenzo itself. Although by 1642 Guercino had moved to Bologna, the paintings on display confirm the authority of a school that maintained its roots in Cento and reaffirm its unquestionable originality.
Cento is confirmed as the nerve centre of the celebrations of its great master after a year of the reopening of the Civic Art Gallery ‘il Guercino’ last autumn, thanks to the restoration that brought it back to its splendour from the damage caused by the earthquake.
