Montese is a small town nestled in the Apennines of Modena in a mainly wooded area rich in forage fields. The town has developed at the foot of the 13th-century fortress with its massive building, double walls and crenellated tower, which can be visited about an hour's drive from Modena.
Territory rich in history, landscapes, small villages and good food.
Montese is a place where the climate and air are still healthy. Its first settlements date back to the Copper Age and the village developed around the castle.
Montese is well-known for its cultivations of potatoes, for the production of Parmigiano Reggiano and chestnuts but it offers a lot of other possibilities. Tourists can follow local paths on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. These natural routes go through woods and fields and link together castles, hamlets, mills and places of religious interest and work.
Other very interesting places are: the History Museum, the Museum dedicated to Augusto Righi, a very well-known physicist from Bologna, the castle, the Oratory of S. Antonino of Monteforte, the Oratory of Riva, the ancient mills in the area of Maserno and Dismano, the Church of S. Pietro and Paolo and finally the Church of S. Giorgio.
