From 24 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, Palazzo Pepoli in Bologna presents Edith Tudor Hart. Between Photography and Espionage, the first major Italian retrospective dedicated to Anglo-Austrian photographer Edith Tudor-Hart (1908-1973), an important figure in 20th-century documentary and social photography.
The exhibition brings together more than 100 photographs portraying European society between the 1930s and the 1950s. Having also studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Tudor-Hart used photography to explore working-class life, social inequality, childhood and women's experiences. Her images offer a compelling record of everyday life during a period of major political and social change.
Organised into five thematic sections, the exhibition also reveals the photographer's secret involvement in Soviet intelligence and her connections with the Cambridge Five spy network. Photographs are displayed alongside historical magazines, personal correspondence and documents from British intelligence archives, offering insight into her extraordinary double life as a photographer and secret agent.
Visitors can discover a remarkable figure in European photography through a journey connecting art, social history and espionage.
