This 24-hour itinerary takes you on a journey through the Valmarecchia valley, exploring sacred sites, Romanesque parish churches, and convents connected to Saint Francis of Assisi, who is said to have performed miracles here between 1213 and 1215.
The route links Verucchio, Talamello and San Leo, covering about 55 km by car, and combines cultural visits with short walks through historic villages and along easy unpaved trails.
Each stop offers quiet moments for reflection, medieval art, and sweeping views across the valley all the way to the sea. This itinerary is ideal for travellers seeking a cultural and contemplative experience.
Travel tips
The first stage of this itinerary starts at the foot of the hill of Verucchio where the Convent of Saint Francis is located; it is the oldest convent in Romagna (1215).
Legend has it that Francis stopped here on his journey, performing three miracles—including silencing the birds so he could pray in peace. An aura of tranquility still envelops visitors today.
For a truly moving experience, walk through the cloister where the Saint planted a cypress tree that has defied the centuries and is still alive and thriving.
The parish church of San Martino in Rafaneto (990 AD) is about 3 km away, in the district of Villa Verucchio. The parish church, an example of Romanesque architecture, is situated at the foot of the hill amidst ancient olive trees; it retains its cosy atmosphere and its crypt is of significant historical interest.
The bare stones and the cosy atmosphere capture one’s soul and tell stories of genuine faith, a source of inspiration for deep thought.
Must-see
The cloister of the convent and the crypt of the Parish Church of San Martino.
Curiosity
According to tradition, Saint Francis planted the staff he used to support himself during his journey in the village; the roots and foliage of the huge old cypress tree sprang forth from it; the cypress tree is more than seven centuries old and can still be seen in the cloister of the Convent of Saint Francis.

It is well worth a visti to this small village of Montefeltro, sheltered by Monte Pincio with cliffs overlooking San Leo and chestnut groves that are perfect for relaxing hikes.
Its compact historic town centre is perfect for a leisurely stroll, providing the opportunity to admire the fountain that graces the square and the cemetery Cell that contains genuine 15th-century treasures, such as the spectacular Crucifix from the “14th Century Rimini School”.
To taste
After your spiritual visit, make sure you try the famous “Ambra di Talamello”, Tonino Guerra’s Fossa cheese known for its unique colour and flavour. It pairs well with honey or aged red wine.
Travel tips
San Leo, with its unmistakable cliff, is the focal point of the last stage of this itinerary, and it is located just 10 km away
The Convent of Sant’Igne is in a quiet area only a short distance from the town centre, in a picturesque, scenic position along the right side of the Marecchia river amidst woods, pastures and cultivated fields.
A fabulously serene spot that preserves the relic of the oak tree under which Saint Francis preached, a tangible representation of Franciscan history. The somber cloister and the Gothic chapter house evoke monastic life, immersed in silence and interrupted only by the presence of nature.
To know
While the outdoor area is accessible and very scenic, the monastery of Sant’Igne can only be visited on certain occasions.
