Toano

Toano is located in the hills, between Val Secchia and the Apennine ridge; it is an important agricultural center for the production of Parmigiano Reggiano. It is about 50 km from Reggio Emilia.

The capital is located on mount Castello (944 m.), and on the top we find the medieval parish church of Santa Maria di Castello. The area offers everything needed to have a pleasant holiday: a swimming pool, sports facilities, hiking or mountain trails and a well-structured accommodation offering, in addition to many events. Toano is part of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.

This territory has been inhabited since Roman times, but its importance increased in the Middle Ages, thanks to the Canossa family, which on Mount Castello had one of its fortresses, in control of the path that from the plain reached Tuscany, today enhanced with the name of Via Matildica del Volto Santo.

Don't miss

The medieval Parish Church of Santa Maria in Toano, with its archaeological site, is the oldest example of medieval architecture in this area.

The Balze of Malpasso, near Quara: a geosite where sandstone rocks emerge, where the waterways have engraved very recessed valley sections. There are two suspended Tibetan bridges, in addition to the normal path, and two equipped paths to reach the peak of Castel Pizzigolo, a medieval archaeological site with a beautiful view of the Dolo valley.
