Autumn is one of the most evocative seasons to discover Modena and its surrounding area. The light grows warmer, colors become more vibrant, and the landscape slows to a different rhythm.
This two-day itinerary crosses a variety of settings, from the city to the hills and up into the Apennines, following the thread of fall foliage and autumn atmospheres.
From the tree-lined avenues of the Ducal Estense Garden to the golden ginkgo trees of Formigine lighting up the park of Villa Gandini, from the rows of Lambrusco Grasparossa vineyards between Levizzano and Castelvetro to the woods and rock formations of the Sassi di Roccamalatina, the route alternates between walks, scenic views, and food-and-wine stops, offering a complete experience accessible to everyone.
We begin our day in the heart of Modena, in this historic green oasis, opened to the public in 1739 by Duke Francesco III d’Este and made fully public in 1870.
In autumn, the park turns into a small Impressionist painting: horse chestnuts, ash trees, lindens, and cedars glow in shades of golden yellow and warm red.
Treat yourself to a slow walk along the gravel paths, guided by the gentle rustle of leaves underfoot.
Tip
Visit early in the morning or at sunset for the best colors.
Now let’s move to Formigine to discover one of the most iconic spots for autumn foliage in the Modena area.
Here, the famous Ginkgo biloba trees put on a breathtaking autumn display.
With their bright yellow leaves, these two ancient Chinese trees stand majestically beside a peaceful pond inhabited by ducks, surrounded by the park designed by Count Gandini. The backdrop of the neoclassical Villa Gandini , now home to the municipal library, adds charm to this picturesque autumn corner.
Take your time to sit on a bench and enjoy the silence: here, autumn moves at a slow and refined pace.
In the afternoon, head up to the Modena hills towards Castelvetro di Modena.
Here opens the typical landscape of Lambrusco Grasparossa, where in autumn the vineyard rows light up in shades from red to orange, creating a succession of panoramic views among vineyards, villages, and winding roads.
As the sun slowly sets behind the hills, let yourself be captivated by the authentic atmosphere of these wine-growing lands.
