Tip
In summer, given the short distance between the towns, you can choose to stay wherever you prefer and extend your stay, to enjoy the typical seaside experience of the Romagna region.
The route starts at the Molo di Levante, one of Cesenatico’s most iconic landmarks, dominated by the Harbour Master’s lighthouse.
The lighthouse is not merely an architectural feature overlooking the sea: it has always symbolised protection, guidance and a safe return home for sailors. Its light, which guides boats into the harbour, has also come to symbolise the town’s strong seafaring identity over the years.
Must-see
• The Porte Vinciane, a hydraulic system inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s designs, which regulate the water level in the harbour canal, protecting Cesenatico from storm surges and preventing salt water from flowing back into the canal during high tides.
• The fishing huts, on the Ponente pier.
• Piazza Spose dei Marinai, where can be found the statue “La Ma”, the work of sculptor Quinto Pagliarani.
Tips
• Along the pier, there are several seafood restaurants overlooking the sea, perfect for a culinary break.
• To get from one side of the harbour canal to the other, there is a simple and picturesque way: the ferry, is a small boat that connects the Levante with the Ponente pier, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to cross the canal in just a few minutes.
Curiosities
• The fishing huts are wooden structures featuring traditional fishing stations with balance nets, used to catch small bluefish without having to go out in a boat; they are one of the most characteristic features of the Romagna coast. They form part of the landscape and further illustrate the town’s seafaring tradition.
• The sculpture in Piazza Spose dei Marinari, which depicts a mother gazing out to sea, awaiting the return of the fishermen, is a tribute to the women of the sailors – key figures in the life of coastal communities – who often remained on land to await the return of the boats.
We move to Gatteo Mare where the landscape opens up between sea and nature, with a promenade ideal for a relaxing stroll.

Heading down from the bridge over the River Rubicon and following the riverbank, whether by bike or on foot, you come to the small bridge over the tributary known as the “Rio Re” and reach the village of San Mauro Mare, situated between the sea and the river, where the landscape becomes more intimate.
As you walk along the seafront and through the nearby harbour areas, you can enjoy a peaceful experience surrounded by open landscapes: the sound of the waves, the small boats passing by and the slow rhythm of life by the sea accompany you every step of the way.
The bridges, stretching out towards the Adriatic, offer unique views of the coast and are ideal spots for photographs, scenic stops and moments of relaxation.
