Sassofeltrio

Sassofeltrio stands on a spur of chalky rock not far from the central part of the Conca valley.

Protected by a defensive wall, it offers a panoramic viewpoint over a vast, sun-drenched valley.

Why visit it

The historic centre of Sassofeltrio is a characteristic cluster of houses furrowed by a single main street that divides it lengthwise and is still surrounded by the mighty fortification walls that bear witness to its medieval origin.

The village of Sant'Anastasio, with its small church containing the remains of Saint Alberico, is known for its sulphurous and alkaline water springs.

At the highest point of the village of Sassofeltrio, there is now a lovely public park ideal for the famous panoramic observations, with fixed binoculars present, that have earned this place the nickname "Terrace of Montefeltro".

In Gesso there is a recent holistic park.

When to go and what to see

Sassofeltrio is all about nature and well-being. It is beautiful to observe the surrounding nature with a valley rich in vegetation.

From the public park "La Rocca" one can enjoy magnificent 360° views that range from the sea to the hills of Montefeltro and the Apennine chain, with a special mention for nearby San Marino that rises majestically, showing its unmistakable profile. Also in the same building is the municipal museum 'little war stories'.

There is a famous motocross track in the village of Fratte. In the area there are nature trails for hiking, horse riding and cycling, consisting of paths with CAI (Italian Alpine Club) signs called: Sentiero dell'Amore (Path of Love), Sorgenti del Marano (Springs of Marano) and the Sentiero delle acque solfuree (Path of Sulphurous Waters), which reaches 800 metres above sea level.

Significant appointments

On the 4th Sunday of September, a delightful village fete is held in Fratte called the "Sagra dei Fagioli con le Cotiche" (Bean and Pork Rind Festival).

This is a delicious, rustic dish prepared using Borlotti beans and pork rind, cooked slowly in plenty of tomato sauce seasoned with a variety of spices and served on slices of piping hot toasted bread.

In the surroundings

Just under 10 km away, it is well worth reaching Gemmano for a day out at Onferno Nature Reserve. Venture on an underground journey into the chalk caves of Onferno, the visitors’ centre, the natural history museum, the multimedia museum and the botanical garden.

About a 30-minute car drive away is the Marecchia Valley. Head to San Leo and visit its famous fortress, which for centuries was the final bulwark to defend the local population. Don’t forget to also visit the Cathedral of St Leone and the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta.
