Located 18km away from Imola, Fontanelice is the green town in Santerno Valley. The historical urban structure dating back to the Middle Ages is still visible in its town center, which revolves around Piazza Roma and the fountain, symbol of the town.
Fontanelice is rooted along the Santerno River, whose banks welcome visitors from all over the Imola area: the river oasis in Fontanelice features BBQ stations and a risto-bar. It is also possible to admire the rocky formation of Riva dei Cavalli (Horses' Cliff), one of the most impressive geosites of the territory.
To escape the summer heat, Fontanelice offers an ideal refuge thanks to the river beach and the swimmable stretch of the Santerno River.
The famous architect Giuseppe Mengoni, who worked on the Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery in Milan, was born in Fontanelice; here the Mengoni Archives still preserve the original documents related to his works.
The territory of Mordano, Imola, Casalfiumanese, Borgo Tossignano, Fontanelice, and Castel del Rio is crossed by the Santerno Cycle Route (currently closed due to flood damage - see official website for updates): a scenic bike ride for any kind of cycling tourist who wishes to be surrounded by nature. Santerno Cycle Route is a mixed trail of gravel and paved roads, connecting the plain of Imola area to the Apennines, from Mordano to Castel del Rio.
The traditional event is on Easter Monday when Fontanelice organizes Piè Fritta Fest, with the local delicacy of fried dough.
