Bologna Montana Art Trail

A path dedicated to land art in the Bologna Apennines

Logo CC

The Bologna Montana Art Trail is an itinerary that crosses the municipalities of the Bologna Montana area, between the valleys of Idice, Savena and Zena, following a path marked by extraordinary works of land art.

This 72-hour journey will lead to the discovery of sculptures and artistic installations made with natural materials (branches, stones, modeled clay...), preferably found directly on the site chosen for the installation and therefore perfectly integrated into the landscape. The first works, created by both Italian and foreign artists, were positioned in 2023 and others in 2024: the final goal is to reach a total number of 50 installations.

The route, equipped with its own signage (which follows CAI paths in various points) and with gpx track is available via the Walk+ app and was designed by the Viva il Verde association. An itinerary designed for lovers of art, nature and immersive outdoor experiences. The art trail can be traveled (in stages) on foot or by bicycle, but you can also decide to travel the longer distances by car and then visit each work thanks to shorter walks.

  • Depending on the means of transport chosen, to complete it in 72 hours, it may be necessary to make a choice between stops.
  • The stages are indicated in such a way as to create a circular route that starts and ends in Bologna, assuming a journey by car between the various locations. During the stops, it is then possible to decide which works to visit, possibly extending the route beyond 72 hours.
  • It is possible to consult the Appennino Bolognese tourist portal to evaluate the possibilities of overnight stays on site.

Starting from Bologna, you can reach the municipality of Monterenzio (the first stop on this journey between art and nature) in about 40 minutes by car. Here, in the Monte Bibele area, there are two artistic installations that tell the story and culture of the area.

    • The Celtic boar: located near the Pianella di Monte Savino Archaeological Park, it is a tribute to the historical roots of this area
    • Pioggia Sonante: a short distance from the hamlet of Quinzano, it is an evocative work that plays with the sounds of nature and the movement of the wind

  • Second stop - Loiano Loiano

Continuing for another 20 minutes you reach the second stop, Loiano. Here you can admire four works:

    • The Istrice and the Tela del ragno, two intriguing works in dialogue with the light of the forest immersed in the vegetation of the pine forest of the town
    • Simbiosi, a majestic sculpture carved from a single trunk that stands out in the Scanello area
    • Lupus Lujanes is located not far away, in the Casoni di Barbarolo area. It is a work that emerges from the meadow and represents the ancestral bond between man and the Apennine fauna

  • Third stop: Monghidoro Monghidoro

Another 10 minutes of travel will take you to Monghidoro which hosts 4 of the most fascinating installations of the Bologna Montana Art Trail.

    • Aquila: an imposing sculpture that dominates the landscape located in the Castellaccio Park, where the medieval castle Scaricalasino once stood
    • Tritone: a mythological figure carved in wood that can be admired moving towards the Alpe
    • Soffioni: a work that plays with the concept of wind and lightness inside the La Martina Park
    • Holy Bee-Love Bee Valley Idice: an installation dedicated to the protection of bees and their ecosystem, installed along the road that leads to San Benedetto del Querceto

  • Fourth stop - San Benedetto Val di Sambro San Benedetto Val di Sambro

To reach the works present in the municipality of San Benedetto Val di Sambro you can first reach the lake of Castel dell’Alpi (10 minutes from Loiano), where you can admire:

    • the Spada nella roccia, iconic and evocative, and La porta delle sindoni, a textile architecture that invites visitors to cross the threshold, welcoming the changes that are beyond it
    • A short distance away we find San Giorgio e il Drago, located along the Via degli Dei near Pian di Balestra
    • Moving on to Montefredente it is instead possible to meet the Mufloni, who face each other in the thick of the woods in an eternal duel

  • Fifth stop: Monzuno Monzuno

The last stop on the route is Monzuno where art merges with the landscape in three unmissable stops.

-Madre Natura: a sculpture that celebrates the energy of the earth in the heart of the country
-The Arpa: made with two split trunks that - between the sound of the water and the scent of the forest - vibrate with the wind near the waterfall in the Rio Maore Park
-Colonne della Memoria: five multicolored structures that represent the primary elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether that are found, like “San Giorgio”, along the famous Via degli Dei, in the Le Croci area
