Bagno di Romagna − Balneum in Latin − is a little village that lies on the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany and was renowned for its thermal waters as far back as Roman times.
Indeed, in 266 BC, the village had a public thermal bath complex supplied by the Santa Agnese spring, which was transformed into the Terme di Santa Agnese in 1828 by Leopold II, the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
Today, the Hotel Terme Santa Agnese continues the village’s ancient vocation by offering a range of treatments all year round to recapture the thermal water tradition that dates all the way back to Roman times.
The Hotel Terme Santa Agnese is supplied with three kinds of water: bicarbonate-rich, hyperthermal, alkaline sulphur water, bicarbonate-rich, thermal, alkaline sulphur water, and bicarbonate-rich, low-mineral sulphur water.
The natural properties of the Santa Agnese spring are a cure-all for a range of disorders (rheumatic, gastrointestinal, vascular, gynaecological, respiratory and ear, nose and throat conditions). More generally, however, these properties can also encourage the normal functioning of the body by neutralising free radicals, oxygenating the blood and dissolving residual acids.
To make the most of these benefits, the Hotel Terme Santa Agnese offers treatments using velvety-soft grey clay mud and thermal waters, which have been aged for 15 months.
The facility features two thermal pools, one therapeutic indoor pool and another outdoor wellness pool fitted with massaging water jets, waterfalls and a counter-current machine. In both pools, the water is between 34°C and 37°C: the perfect temperature to relax the body and leave skin feeling clean and smooth.
One of the facility's main features is the Roman thermal bath area, which recreates the fixtures and ways in which the ancient Romans would experience a session at the baths. A day at the Roman baths is a real purifying and regenerating experience for the body and involves four different stages: the Herbarium, Frigidarium, Tepidarium and Calidarium.
The Herbarium, also known as the “gentle sauna”, is heated to a maximum of 60°C and has a low level of humidity. This special chamber also features bunches of herbs from the Casentinesi forests, which in the heat release their properties into the air, benefiting the airways and skin, and relaxing tense muscles.
Once the body is warm, the next step in the session will take you to the Frigidarium, where you will soak in a reinvigorating ice bath to stimulate blood circulation. The last stop in this detoxifying process is the thermal grottoes which comprise the Tepidarium, at 39°C, and the Calidarium, at 45°C.
The Hotel Terme Santa Agnese also offers massages, wellness therapies and a range of different facial and body treatments to meet every need.
